Air Filtration Systems & Filter Types

1. Primary Dry Air Filters

  • Working Principle: Utilizes high-density microporous cellulose media or synthetic microglass fibers to physically strain and depth-trap airborne contaminants on the outer media surfaces.
  • Primary Function: Delivers high-precision air filtration with efficiency ratings exceeding 99.5%. It serves as the primary intake defense for highway trucks, construction machinery, and passenger vehicles.
  • Applications: Standard highway transport, paved road operations, and low-to-medium dust environments.

2. Air Pre-Cleaners / Cyclonic Dust Ejectors

  • Working Principle: Features internal vanes or cyclonic tubes that force incoming air into a rapid vortex. Centrifugal force flings heavy sand particles, debris, and water droplets outward against the housing walls, discharging them before air reaches the main filter element.
  • Primary Function: Acts as a heavy-duty first-stage coarse separator, removing 80% to 90% of bulk dust. This drastically reduces dust loading on the primary filter, extending its service life by 2x to 3x.
  • Applications: Open-pit mining, heavy earthmoving, desert operations, and agricultural harvesting in high-dust conditions.

3. Safety Elements / Inner Filters

  • Working Principle: Installed inside the hollow core of the primary dry filter element, constructed with high-flow, low-restriction synthetic media.
  • Primary Function:

Service Protection: Prevents loose surface dirt from dropping directly into the engine intake manifold when technicians remove or service the outer primary filter.

Emergency Fail-Safe: Acts as a secondary barrier if the primary element collapses, ruptures from vibration, or suffers seal degradation, preventing sudden dust bypass and engine seizure.

  • Applications: Heavy excavators, haul trucks, stationary generator sets, and mission-critical industrial equipment where intake bypass is strictly unacceptable.

4. Oil Bath Air Filters

  • Working Principle: Directs incoming air downward into an oil reservoir at high velocity. Heavy dust particles plunge into the oil due to inertia and become trapped, while oil-misted air passes through a mesh element to capture residual fine dust.
  • Primary Function: Offers high dust-holding capacity and moisture tolerance. The metallic mesh can be washed and the reservoir fluid replaced, allowing reusable service in remote locations.
  • Applications: Older tractors, legacy machinery, and remote mining equipment operating without stable spare part supply chains. (Note: Largely phased out in modern electronically controlled engines due to lower filtration precision compared to synthetic media).

5. Oiled Cotton / Foam High-Flow Filters

  • Working Principle: Constructed from multi-layer cotton gauze or high-density foam saturated with tacky filter oil to capture fine particles through surface adhesion.
  • Primary Function: Maintains adequate filtration efficiency while significantly minimizing intake restriction, maximizing air mass flow for rapid throttle response.
  • Applications: High-performance racing, modified vehicles, and specialized equipment demanding immediate intake response.
