Function of Generator Governor

Speed Control
The primary function of a governor is to control the speed of the diesel engine. The governor ensures that the engine runs at a consistent and precise speed, typically measured in revolutions per minute (RPM).

Frequency Regulation
By controlling the engine’s speed, the governor indirectly regulates the output frequency of the generator. A stable frequency is crucial for maintaining the synchronization of the generator with the grid or other generators in a parallel operation.

Voltage Regulation
The engine’s speed, and therefore the generator’s output voltage, is controlled by the governor. Voltage regulation is critical for ensuring that the generator produces electrical power within acceptable voltage limits.

Load Response
The governor responds to changes in electrical load demand. When the load on the generator increases, the governor increases the engine’s fuel input to maintain the desired speed and output.

Stability and Synchronization
Governors play a key role in maintaining the stability of the generator set. They ensure that the generator operates in synchrony with the grid or other generators in a parallel configuration.

Load Sharing in Parallel Operation
In systems where multiple generators operate in parallel, governors help distribute the load evenly among the generators. They ensure that each generator contributes its fair share of power to maintain load balance and prevent overloading of any single generator.

Overload Protection
Governors incorporate protective features to prevent engine overload. If the load demand exceeds the generator’s capacity, the governor can reduce fuel input or initiate an emergency shutdown to protect the engine from damage.

Throttle Control
Governors control the engine’s throttle position, which regulates the flow of fuel to the engine. This precise control allows for fine adjustments to the engine’s speed and power output, ensuring stable and accurate frequency and voltage control.

Load Transitions
Governors are designed to respond to rapid load changes, ensuring that the generator can quickly adapt to varying load conditions without causing frequency or voltage fluctuations.

Adjustment Steps of Generator Governor

Debug the high-speed start action point.
Start the test bench and slowly approach the rated speed of the fuel injection pump from low to high, so that the control arm of the fuel injection pump reaches the maximum fuel supply direction. Then slowly increase the speed of the fuel injection pump and pay attention to the direction of the correction rod.

Debug the low-speed startup point.
Start the test device below the idle speed, run the fuel injection pump below the idle speed, and then slowly rotate the control arm automatically. When the fuel injection pump starts to supply fuel, fix the control arm and gradually increase the speed of the fuel injection pump, observing the direction change of the fuel supply adjustment rod.

Correction of all load screws.

Loosen the full load limit screw to allow the fuel injection pump to slowly move at the rated speed. Next, slowly move the control arm position. When the fuel supply correction rod reaches the maximum stroke, stop rotating the control arm, screw in the full load limit screw, and touch the fan module.

Adjust the idle stability spring.
The centrifugal force of the governor flying block of a diesel generator is very small and cannot immediately push the fuel supply control rod to maximize the fuel supply. The function of an air conditioner is to assist in adjusting the idle sensitivity.

Stop and correct the fuel supply restriction screw.
After adjusting the speed control configuration, stop the start of the fuel injection pump. At this point, the fuel supply correction gear will move a certain distance towards the water injection position.

FAQ

Q: How does a generator governor work?

A: A generator governor is a device that controls the speed of a generator. It is like a brain that tells the generator how fast or slow it needs to spin in order to produce the right amount of electricity. Imagine you have a toy car with a speed control knob. Turning the knob makes the car go faster or slower.

Q: What are the different types of governors in generators?

A: Mechanical/Electrical Control – Older generator sets utilize these control systems. The fuel system is controlled by a mechanical governor. Electronic Control – Newer generator sets use an electronic control system.

Q: What is the difference between AVR and governor in generator?

A: The generator output voltage is regulated by the exciting current supplied by the automatic voltage regulator (AVR). Voltage/frequency stability during a motor starting depends on the capability of the generator AVR to control the voltage, and the capability of the governor (GOV) to keep the frequency in limits.

Q: What is the droop setting of a generator governor?

A: Normally, a droop governor lowers the speed reference from 3 to 5 percent of the reference speed over the full range of the governor output. Thus a 3% droop governor with a reference speed of 1854 rpm at no fuel would have a reference speed of 1800 rpm at max fuel (61.8 Hz at no fuel and 60 Hz at max fuel).

Q: What controls the governor on a generator?

A: Speed Sensing: The governor receives feedback on the engine's rotational speed from a speed sensor, usually in the form of a magnetic pickup or an electronic sensor. Speed Setting: The desired or target speed is set by the operator or system controller. This is typically referred to as the governor's "set point."

Q: Does the governor control engine speed?

A: A centrifugal governor is a specific type of governor with a feedback system that controls the speed of an engine by regulating the flow of fuel or working fluid, so as to maintain a near-constant speed. It uses the principle of proportional control. Drawing of a centrifugal "fly-ball" governor.
