Air Oil Separator

Air oil separators (AOS) are essential components in various mechanical devices, such as air compressors and engines, used to remove oil mist or droplets from compressed air or gas. This process is crucial for protecting downstream equipment, ensuring air output quality, and enabling the recovered oil to be reused for lubrication.

Function and Importance of Air Oil Separtor
The primary function of an air oil separator is to maintain system efficiency and longevity by ensuring that oil is contained within the lubrication circuit and not carried over into other parts of the system or released into the environment.
In Air Compressors: Oil is injected into oil-flooded screw compressors to lubricate components, seal the compression cycle, and absorb heat. The AOS then separates this oil from the compressed air before the air exits the system. The separated oil is scavenged and returned to the oil sump for reuse, which reduces oil consumption and operational costs.
In Engines: In high-performance or turbocharged engines, the AOS handles "blow-by" gases from the crankcase, which often contain oil vapor. It separates the oil from these gases, allowing only clean air to be recirculated into the intake system while the oil drains back to the engine's oil supply. This prevents oil buildup, which can cause performance issues, engine misfires, and potentially catastrophic damage.
Environmental Compliance: By efficiently separating and containing oil, these devices help lower emissions and ensure that discharge water from compressor systems meets environmental regulations.

How Air Oil Separator Work
Air oil separators primarily work on the principle of coalescence and mechanical separation methods.
Initial Separation (Centrifugal Force/Impact): The air/oil mixture first enters a separation tank or vessel. A splash plate or angled inlet often forces the mixture into a swirling motion, using centrifugal force to push the heavier oil droplets to the walls where they fall to the bottom due to gravity. This stage can remove up to 85% of the oil.
Fine Filtration (Coalescence): The remaining air, which still contains fine oil mist and aerosols, passes through a fine filter element, typically made of micro-glass fibers. As the small oil droplets pass through the filter media, they collide and merge, or "coalesce," into larger droplets.
Collection and Return: Once the droplets are large enough, gravity causes them to collect at the bottom of the filter or the separator vessel. A scavenger line then uses internal pressure to return this collected liquid oil back to the compressor's oil circuit or engine's crankcase. The clean, oil-free air exits the system.

Types of Air Oil Separators
Different designs are used depending on the application and requirements.
Filter Element Types:
Cartridge Style: A replaceable filter cartridge is housed inside a pressure vessel.
Spin-On Style: Resembling a large oil filter, this type screws onto the outside of the machine for easy maintenance.
Wrap Elements / Depth Separators: These use various configurations of filter media for specific flow rates and separation efficiencies.
Design Types:
Centrifugal Purifiers/Breathers: Commonly used in aircraft and high-performance vehicles, these rotate at high speeds to force separation.
Catch Cans: A simpler, passive option often used in automotive aftermarket applications to collect oil vapor, requiring manual draining. AOS systems, in contrast, typically return the oil automatically to the system.
